This year is almost done, B, and i have a top ten list due at work. instead of doing it, i wrote a note explaining why i needed more time and why it's not fair to have a list due at the beginning of december. what if i become aware of my favorite album from this year NEXT WEEK? what if it's not available til december 21? what's so wrong with december that it can't hang with the rest of the months regarding year-end best of lists? i'm not subscribing to this notion. so i will be posting my favorite things from this year throughout this month.

starting with balam acab (not because it's my number one, but because it's first alphabetically)... i believe this came out in the summer (maybe late summer) and is a perfect nighttime jam album. perfect for warm walks, hot cocoa, or watching snow fall (it snowed today... only a little though). all those things are for wusses and i don't do any of that ish. so nevermind... this is a good album for lifting weights and fighting. can't wait to fight someone and play this.

honestly, i don't know if this will make my top ten. but i'm enjoying right now. be good to eachother, people.

it's saturday night and all my friends are doing dumb stuff. one roommate is out of town to meet his girlfriend's parents. the other roommate is at a wedding. my co-workers are at a show i DO NOT CARE TO BE AT. i'm home... listening... waiting... chilling... probably going to drink some wine again... by myself (just like last night). that's fine though. more wine for me. even though i can only really handle one glass. i do have a question though... say i do eventually make it out of the house to do something... how do avoid the purple lips? shit looks straight stupid.

anyway, yesterday i received a mix. a perfect mix. it's been getting a lot of play on my roommate's CD player. my CD player is broken; my roommate broke it when he dropped my laptop (i didn't tell him).
it's weird... the last time i received a mix i really really liked was like 2003. i remember because it was the year i started working at the book store and received mysterious mixes in my employee mailbox. it was a girl. we dated for a while. she turned out to be crazy so i had to dip out. but she had impeccable taste in music... and that's all that matters in life. the end.

(i hope sarcasm was noted in that last line there)

decided to stay at my parents tonight. i waaas going to go home, but i fell asleep on the floor here and thought it would be better to just crash here the rest of the night... after this post, of course. the 35 minute drive home sucks when i'm tired and i want to avoid parking on the street as my car got keyed last night. i mean it's no big deal that there's a few scratches on my car... it's just a car. but that someone would do something like that bothers me. if you want to vandalize something, go tag walmart... the actual building. it's not like they (as a company) go to their parent's house to make bean burritos to last them the week because they're trying to save money for their best friend's wedding in Arizona. eff, people... EFF! i just bought that car too. and i don't care that it's a used Camry. i still worked a lot of hours.
i must be tired. i'm ranting something i didn't even think about two hours ago.

a block away from my parent's home is a studio i frequent to make music, get advice, play with synths, hang out with friends... STG SoundLabs. dude (suit and tie guy) makes modular synths and sells them to your favorite artists (i thought about name dropping here, but i'll refrain). homeboy also makes tunes. his recent recording is from a live show. i dig it a lot. people act surprised when i mentioned i was going to my grandfather's to watch boxing with my family last night. i'm a very calm person, but there is something about being physical i enjoy. maybe because i grew up with a family of boxers; my grandfather was a boxer, my uncles were boxers (one of them a golden gloves winner), my uncles'/grandfather's first cousin was ranked 7th in the world as a super featherweight, i watched my dad train on bags, they all took me to boxing matches before i was even in preschool... and so on and on and on... the point is i grew up around boxing and i want to feel unapologetic, BUT there is a part of me that feels like it's a bunch of shit for two people to act violent towards each other for sport. that part of me wants to balance out the testosterone drive that makes my fist clinch and hands clammy when i watch two athletes duke it out. that part of me is the same part that likes to chill out on the floor and listen to airy music and let my mind go.
last spring, sick in france, i was searching for the kind of music i could groove to on my back... acheron was what i found. realising there were only 25 cassettes of this made, i jumped on getting a copy to be waiting for me when i got back home. you guys don't have to wait. find a nice spot on the floor and don't think about things that make your hands sweat. space the eff out, people. peace.

hopefully this new year and me turning 28 in a few months doesn't mean me turning into a sad shit. maybe its the weather or maybe its girls being devils. maybe its both. but its mostly females being devils. seriously, why do you guys have to be a bunch of shitheads? the nice ones are with butt-holes, the mean ones play games, the smart ones are just too smart and know better, and the interesting ones are the most effed up,
daedelus seemed to have gotten lucky. he and his wife made a pretty lovely album for doing anything to. you can sleep to it, wake up to it, drive to it, even play wii to it (i was doing that while the upload was going on).
there are a few things that disgust me with this album though. the first one being that my favorite track on here is about cats. i really don't like cats. they're supreme turds and they don't listen for shits. the other disgusting thing is their love for eachother. you can just hear it throughout the album. can't they just keep that to themselves? i'm happy for them and all, but efffffff.

really though, there are some very nice songs on here. besides 'cat fancy', 'woebegone' is a gem for the lonesome. and gem is her name!

i'm not sure if you guys have ever been to boomkat, but that's how i discovered this album for myself. it was on sale for i think $3 and the preview samples were pretty rad. when i got the cd in the mail and began listening, my excited face slowly turned into a sad face. then i got to track 5 and everything was good again. the sun came out, kids began playing outside, hands across america happened in my once sad heart and face. i knew everything was going to be OKAY.

with a name like the fun years, one would think their music would be loud and "fun"... but no, the fun years manage to take fun out of anything you're doing. it's just going to make you want to listen and think. think about life and the things you forgot to do in the last year. not to say i don't like listening to them; quite the opposite, i REALLY enjoy listening to this album. A LOT.

'thermals' is a bit different from their usual rhythmic drum patterns and drone laced albums, but from what i gathered, its because these tracks were made during their fiberforms years (which i'll up later). sit in your apartment, lay on the couch (if your cat is on the couch, kick it off and let your dog chill with you instead), stare at the ceiling, and fall asleep.

'Musique Pour 3 Femmes Enceintes' seems to have mastered the art of being intense and chill at the same time... it reminds me a bit of electric birds or efterklang at times... if they used found sounds instead of 57 instruments all at the same time.

so, its glitch, but relaxing glitch. but i feel weird saying its relaxing because it makes me feel tense too. i don't know how to feel anymore... thanks figlife. now i'm never going to know how i'm supposed to feel.

for real though, thank you for this album.

last february my girlfriend bought me tickets to see dj shadow and cut chemist for my birthday. one of the gifts ever... but we missed the show because amtrak kept delaying the departure time and when we finally left, there was an 1 hour delay halfway there. so now all i have are unhappy memories and unused dj shadow + cutchemist live at parkwest tickets. cool!
this is isn't the chicago show, but i'm assuming its just as good since they actually made a dvd of it.

as you can probably tell, boards of canada are one of my favorites. there is just something about them that sets their electronic beats apart from everyone else. maybe its the organic quality of their sounds or maybe its in the hidden messages they put in the music. i don't know. this ep actually got me into listening to BoC. there are a few notes around the 5:05-5:07 mark that give me goosebumps. needles to say, this ep holds a special place in my heart, along with the band heart.... and "hell is for children", pat benatar.

anyway...this was one of those albums i bought because of the 30 second samples you can listen to at a big bookstore. it has mood, nice drums, and some nice spacey jazz and psychedelic samples blended to make an album for any fan of what the kids from the 90's would call trip hop.
from what i read, 'soulmates' was not intended to be an album. elvin estrela, nobody, used this collection of beats to sell to MCs in LA to make some money.... but it sounds like an album to me.
one warning: the tracks with rappers are not the best of the bunch.

guillermo s. herren and eva puyeulo muns made some lovely tunes that should be shared. mister herren is better known as prefuse 73. so you might recognize a glimpse of that hip hop glitchyness heaven in this, his lesser known project, savath y savalas. but this music is much more calm and very much on the jazz and acoustic side. oh, and the lyrics are in catalan and spanish. what sucka? que onda, chupon?

'a few old tunes' was released in 1996 on cassette only... so, good luck getting your hands on one of those.
some of the tracks sound like early versions of songs on their warp releases and some of them don't sound like BoC at all.
